"As the artist must know the message of his finished work, and the skilled worker must understand how best to use his tools, so must the rider have a precise vision of his goals and the means to obtain them."
Riding Lessons
At Horses of the Sun we offer riding lessons in an safe, inclusive and fun environment for riders of all levels and ages. The main principle of our work is never to disturb the horse in its natural movement. The horse’s movement and balance should be no different in the schooling area, with the rider, than out in the field running with the herd. When working with the natural movement of a horse and allowing freedom of balance, your horse will be relaxed, flexible, and obedient. These qualities are the basis for every kind of riding.
Group LessonsRiders will develop their skills in riding at various gaits—halt, walk, trot, and canter—while also learning to care for and handle the horses. Riders will lead, tack up, and cool down the horses, as well as clean the tack. More experienced riders will assist instructors by helping others on the ground and in the saddle. Whether you're a beginner or experienced, we emphasize the importance of the horse’s natural movement and balance, creating a fun and supportive environment for all riders. Classes are kept small, typically 3-6 riders per group.

Appropriate clothing for riding must be worn before, during, and after the Riding classes. Appropriate clothing for the rider consists of an ASTM-approved riding helmet, footwear appropriate for riding (i.e., riding boots), and pants appropriate for riding. A properly fitted safety vest for riding is also strongly recommended.

Classical Riding
The objective of Classical Riding is to train a horse and rider so that the focus is on harmony. Through working with the natural movement of the horse and allowing freedom of balance, a quiet, supple, and obedient horse with smooth movements evolves.
Whether in dressage, voltige, or riding cross-country, the horse should always be quiet, supple, and obedient. These qualities are the basis for any kind of riding. During each phase of riding, the naturalness of the horse is fostered. Each horse is viewed as an individual, and training schedules, goals, and objectives are set up so that this individuality is never compromised. The naturalness of the horse always comes first. All work, from starting a young horse to collected riding is done on a loose rein. The contact between horse and rider is developed to light “fingertip” accuracy. |
